Words have power, and the way we talk to and about ourselves can have a significant impact on our thoughts, emotions and behaviors. That’s where positive thoughts and curious perspectives come in—repeating certain phrases to yourself can help to boost your self-esteem, become a better listener, reduce your stress, create a more positive mindset, motivate you to take certain actions, and improve your overall well-being.
Not to mention, we have to work to counter all of the Repeat Exposure to the Negative feedback loops: Political News that seemingly highlights we should be in Fear of what the “enemy” is doing, Doom scrolling, Doom watching, and those old statements that seem engrained from years ago about what we will never be.
So, how can you start taking advantage of all the benefits that more healthy thoughts, affirmations and curiosity can offer to support a more healthy and positive persecutive? Begin by choosing the phrases that will best serve your needs. Here are some ideas, but choose something that resonates with YOU
- I deserve to be happy.
- I’m strong enough to get through this.
- My body is beautiful.
- I trust myself.
- I’m going to be alright.
- I can do whatever I put my mind to.
- I’m proud of myself.
- Today is going to be a great day.
- I’m worthy of love.
- I’m acknowledge the things I can’t control, and will work on the things that I CAN control.
- Maybe the other political party is not Evil, they just do not have the lived experience that I have.
- If the politics divide us, what other domains or topics Can we talk about to preserve relationships?
- I am going to commit to being curious and asking questions when I meet those whom I do not understand (maybe political, spiritual, or a marginalized population, LGBTQ+)
Once you’ve selected the areas you want to explore, decide how you want to incorporate them into your routine—maybe you can say them as you’re getting ready in the morning, commuting to work, or winding down before bed. Maybe it is a post it note under your mouse on your desk to “practice curiosity” of those you don’t understand.
Many people find it helpful to recite affirmations out loud, but you can also say them to yourself, if preferred. No matter what, it’s important that you acknowledge these phrases and commitments daily, since doing so makes it easier for your brain to adapt and create new thinking habits.
